Is Imitation Really the Sincerest Form of Flattery?
Ahh, those famous words don’t always ring true when it comes to friends and fashion. It’s one thing to admire a friend or co-worker’s style and be “inspired” by it but, to deliberately purchase the exact same item….well, that’s a whole other ball game, sister. It was cute to have the same sweater or shoes or lunch box when we were in grade school but, as we women get older, it is often our fashion sense or style that separates us from the pack. So, when Suzie, who sits in the cube next to you waltzes into the office with the same shoes on that you bought last week, can you help but, feel slightly wronged?
I love the way this article from The New York Post humorously broaches the topic. It may seem shallow and selfish but, I think it’s a major friend and fashion faux pas. Are you listening, GF’s?? If you like it that much, just ask to borrow it! Love Jane

Coincidence buying the same fashionable piece is one thing but if someone purposefully buys the same thing that they’ve seen you wear AND they wear it in “shared space” (e.g., work, social event, etc.) where you might see them (let alone, you might wear yours), that’s just plain malicious and WRONG! I read the NY Post article and despite the excuses, I would never, ever do that to someone, especially not a friend. Now, if it’s someone who I can’t stand and I look way better in it than they do, well that’s a whole other story. ;o)

I worked with a girl like that once, she copied everything one of our other co-workers would wear. It was creepy!

I agree, its not flattery.
I have two friends who continuously have a fashion battle, its a little sad. We are all individuals and the way we dress should 100% reflect this. Making our own choice and enjoying every minute, not copying – it doesnt have the same feeling of reward as your own orginal outfit choice does.
